LD has been an audiobook listener for years, but she'll be the first to admit it took a while to find her thing. She started with personal growth books — you know, the kind where someone tells you to wake up at 5am and journal your feelings — and while she doesn't regret it exactly, it wasn't exactly riveting. Then she discovered thrillers and romance, and honestly? That was it. Game over. She never looked back.
You'll find LD listening while driving — though not with the kids in the car, because you just never know where a plot is going and she is not explaining that scene to an 11-year-old. She sits comfortably at 1.7 speed, has tested 1.8 and survived, and has decided that is where the line is. Do not ask her to go faster.
The narrator is never an afterthought for LD — it is literally part of the rating. A whiny narrator? She's out. A cocky narrator? Also out. There is one specific narrator with a truly unsettling female voice that shall not be named but absolutely caused an immediate DNF. What LD wants is someone who can do multiple tones and voices well enough that you always know who's speaking without checking the chapter heading. That's the bar. It's not a high bar. And yet.
Cover gets her first, story keeps her — and her sweet spot is romance and thrillers with authors she trusts completely. Her go-to names are Vi Keeland, Penelope Ward, Lauren Blakely, Abby Jimenez, Kendall Ryan, Kylie Scott, and Carly Phillips. Hand her something from that list with a great narrator and she will be unreachable for the rest of the day.
CJ has been a reader her entire life. We're talking a book at the table with every meal growing up and two in her purse today, just in case. When she was twelve she even packed her suitcase full of books.
She took a decade off from reading while her kids were small and her business was growing, but came back with enthusiasm in 2023. She now reads 300+ books a year and has no plans to slow down. She reads in all formats (physical, ebook, audio) and will switch between them mid-paragraph without skipping a beat. Every format has its place, and she often has a few different books on the go at once. The part that really horrifies people is that she pays zero attention to chapters and pauses wherever she is to pick up later. Mid paragraph, mid chapter, doesn't matter. Some call it chaos, but she likes the variety. That, and her (diagnosed) ADHD brain demands options.
Genre-wise, CJ moves in phases and her book preference is led by mood alone. This week it may be fantasy books, but next week could be hockey romance — there's no way to predict. She leans toward the dark and unusual but loves all fiction.
Her rating system is simple, looking for books that sweep her away into the story without pulling her back out with stunted dialogue or plot holes. Four stars if it was a good easy read that she enjoyed and would recommend with a caveat or two, and three stars if it wasn't bad, but wasn't something that made her feel much. Life is too short to push through a book that's not bringing you joy.
